Supporting Singapore's Power Sector Decarbonisation
The Singapore Economic Development Board issued a closed call for proposals in September 2025 to test biomethane’s potential for power generation and industrial applications.
Biomethane is a promising pathway to decarbonise the power sector while supporting energy security.
- Replaces fossil natural gas
- Enables carbon emissions abatement without costly retrofits, as it can make use of the current natural gas infrastructure
- Supports the continued use of existing combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) as biomethane and natural gas can be used inter-changeably.
The biomethane sandbox aims to catalyse market development by facilitating matchmaking between supply and demand in Singapore’s energy ecosystem. This positions us to achieve our long-term net zero emissions aspiration by 2050.
