International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a sustainability certification system for feedstocks and markets. There are three certification systems depending on the market you would like to supply your sustainable material to. The certifications are ISCC EU, ISCC CORSIA (PLUS) and ISCC PLUS. However, they are largely harmonised and hence wth only one audit, three certificates can be issued to supply all markets.
The ISCC EU certification scheme verifies compliance with the European Union’s legal requirements for sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions savings criteria for renewable fuels, as well as the production of electricity, heating and cooling from biomass. These requirements are set out in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and apply to all EU Member States. ISCC EU also covers additional ecological and social requirements that go beyond the legal requirements of RED III.
CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, is International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) instrument to address the increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from aviation industry. The ISCC CORSIA certification system aims to promote sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as a viable solution to reduce GHG.
ISCC Plus validates sustainability characteristics of alternative feedstocks. These can be waste and residues, renewable-energy-derived feedstock, but also sustainably grown agricultural raw materials and forest biomass. Materials derived from alternative feedstocks can be classified into the four categories i.e. Circular Materials, Bio-circular Materials, Bio Materials and Renewable-energy-derived Materials.
